SE study
First randomised controlled study on Somatic Experiencing shows it is an effective method to reduce PTSD symptoms.
Video of founder Peter Levine talking about the Somatic Experiencing approach:
Somatic Experiencing® (SE) is a body-focused therapy designed to relieve symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), chronic stress, and other trauma-related conditions by helping regulate the nervous system. Developed by Dr. Peter A. Levine, SE works by tuning into the body’s innate ability to heal, using awareness of physical sensations to gently process and release stored trauma.
Using the innate ability humans have to overcome trauma, SE encourages and utilises the awareness of sensations in the body to help people re-negotiate and process the physical, emotional and physiological effects of post traumatic stress disorder and other stress and trauma-related health problems.
While gently pacing the process so the individual can safely assimilate the changes within their nervous system without overwhelm, SE may help restore a sense of aliveness, relaxation and wholeness in the aftermath of trauma or after periods of chronic stress.
SE can help process a wide range of traumatic or stressful experiences, including:
✔️ Car accidents & impact injuries
✔️ Childhood attachment wounds
✔️ Abuse & assault
✔️ Chronic stress & burnout
✔️ Surgeries & medical trauma
✔️ War & high-intensity environments
At its core, SE works with the body’s natural stress-response system (fight, flight, freeze) using a technique called pendulation—gently shifting between stored trauma sensations and a sense of calm and safety. This process strengthens resilience, making it easier to manage difficult emotions and sensations in daily life.
